Normally big brothers usually get a little jealous when they learn they’re going to have a new addition to the family, a new baby brother. They often see this as more of a threat to the attention they’re used to see from mom and dad.
“Older babies and toddlers often get jealous when their mom carries another baby,” says pediatrician Tanya Remer Altmann, editor of The Wonder Years: Helping Your Baby and Young Child Successfully Negotiate the Major Developmental Milestones. “It usually happens between 9 and 15 months.”
Dr. Altmann says, “Your baby is accustomed to having your full attention. If suddenly there’s someone else to share with her, she’s going to say, ‘Hey, that’s my mom!'”.
The positive side of your baby’s jealousy is that it means that he truly knows who you are and wants your attention. An affectionate bond binds them together. If you have not seen it show anxiety when you leave the room or leave the house, or anxiety to strangers when a new person enters the room, you will probably soon see it.
