The students said they smelled smoke in the rear of the bus before she really understood what that meant.
By the time Renita picked up the telephone to call the transportation center, the bus had caught on fire.
Using her fast-thinking and motherly abilities, Renita let the children — who ranged in age from four to 10 — into a single-file line.
Subsequently, she safely got the students off the bus as it burst into flames in a residential neighborhood.
Renita, an individual mother of two, didn’t stop there. She could have just assumed all the students left it at that and made it off the bus.
But Renita ran back into the burning vehicle and risked her own life to make certain there were no kids unaccounted for.
