Distorted Self-Image
People with low self-esteem have a negative view of their ability to function in a healthy way.
They tend to engage in negative self talk, constantly putting themselves down, and comparing themselves to the people around them. This often leads them to the conclusion that they are somehow inferior to others.
Lack of Self-Confidence
Directly related to a faulty self-image, people with low self-esteem often lack self-confidence.
They generally become overachievers or underachievers. Some will try hard to prove their inadequacy – often becoming really successful, while others let go of themselves entirely because they believe that they don’t have what it takes to succeed in life.
The latter group will remain in abusive or unsatisfying relationships, give up on their dreams or remain in poor-paying jobs because they’re convinced that if they try to change their situations, they’ll either fail or be left alone.
